Discover your potential with Volt Young Company

Volt Young Company offers intensive part-time theatre training in London. We specialize in musical theatre, dance, acting for theatre, voice, and film, with guidance from leading industry professionals.

Our specialized training programs

Volt Young Company provides comprehensive training across various disciplines to help you master the art of performance. Across all four disciplines, the focus is on more than simply learning a routine or preparing a performance. We train the whole performer. Students are encouraged to develop technique, confidence, creativity, discipline and versatility, while gaining practical experience across both stage and screen.

Musical theatre intensive

Our musical theatre training brings together acting, singing and dance to develop confident, versatile performers who can tell a story through every aspect of their performance.

Students explore musical theatre repertoire, character, storytelling, ensemble work and performance technique, while developing the discipline and versatility expected of performers working professionally.

Training is practical, energetic and performance-led, with students regularly putting their skills into practice through live theatre performance and filmed work for screen.

Acting for stage & film

Performing for a live audience and performing for a camera require very different skills. Our Stage & Screen training gives students the opportunity to experience both.

Students develop characterisation, storytelling, camera technique, audition skills, physical awareness and performance confidence, learning how to adapt their work for the demands of the stage and the screen.

Students have the opportunity to work in front of professional cameras, alongside live performance opportunities in the theatre, allowing them to experience the difference between performing for an audience and performing for the lens.

Dance training

Our dance training is designed to develop strong, versatile performers, combining technique with performance quality, musicality and confidence.

Students work across a range of dance styles relevant to musical theatre and contemporary performance, developing coordination, strength, flexibility, rhythm and stage presence.

As students progress through the Companies, training becomes increasingly focused on the demands of professional performance, helping them become confident movers who can respond quickly, perform with energy and contribute as part of an ensemble.

Voice & speech training

A strong performer needs a voice that can communicate, connect and command attention.

Our Voice & Speech training develops vocal technique, clarity, projection, articulation, breath control and confident communication, alongside the skills needed to deliver text and song with authenticity.

Students learn how to use their voices effectively for both live theatre and screen performance, understanding how vocal choices and delivery can change depending on the environment.

Training also supports students in developing their individual vocal identity, giving them greater confidence whether they are performing a musical theatre number, delivering a monologue, auditioning or working in front of a camera.

Volt is designed to combine the best of both. Students receive structured performing arts tuition while also being given opportunities to perform on stage and work in front of professional cameras. We are first and formost a training provider, but we structure the classes like that of a performance company, giving students a real insight to the world of performing and led by industry professionals.

What makes Volt different from other performing arts training?

We put a strong emphasis on professional preparation.Students don't only rehearse for a show. They learn how performers actually work, including performance discipline, working with others, performing for an audience and adapting their performance for the camera.

Do students get to perform in front of an audience?

Yes. Live performance is an important part of Volt. Students have opportunities to take their training from the studio into live theatre performance.

Yes. Screen performance is an integral part of Volt training. Students learn how to perform specifically for camera and gain practical experience working in front of professional filming equipment including RED, Arri and BlackMagic Cameras.

Between 3 - 5 hours per week depending on the group and more during holiday intensives.

What happens during the weekly three-hour session?

Students work across the core Volt disciplines, including acting, musical theatre, singing, dance, voice and speech, and performance for stage and screen.

Will students perform regularly?

Performance is a major part of the Volt experience. The exact performance schedule will depend on the programme and productions being undertaken.

Does my child have to audition to join Volt Young Company

No however when and if you and your child are ready to move up to Volt Pro, an audition is held in front of our senior teaching team however this is very relaxed.

Can I pay for the full year upfront?

Yes. We can offer a full-year upfront payment option as well as the standard rolling option. We do not charge for school holidays unless you have signed up for our Holiday Intensives.

What happens if I am struggling to make a payment?

We encourage parents to speak to us as early as possible if they are experiencing difficulties so that we can discuss the situation. Ultimately, we put students first and we will work on an individual basis in these situations.

Does Volt have a uniform?

Volt students have a simple uniform designed to create a strong sense of identity and community while allowing freedom of movement. We require that students attend classes in at least a Volt Signature t-shirt (they will be entitled to one free t-shirt upon joining) but parents may wish to purchase further student gear on our website. If students choose, they may instead or as well wear a Volt Hoodie or Sweatshirt which is recommended during the colder months.

We also recommend students wear comfortable trousers for movement and dance activities, as well as trainers or jazz shoes.

For safety reasons due to the nature of our work, jewlery and watches are prohbited during classes.

What should students bring to class?

Students should bring their usual training essentials, including appropriate footwear and a drink.

How often will students perform?

Performance opportunities will take place throughout the year, with the exact schedule depending on productions and projects. The production schedule is announced at the start of each term by the Artistic Director.

Will students perform in professional theatres?

Volt is committed to giving young performers genuine theatre performance experience, including opportunities to perform in professional-standard venues where appropriate.

Will students appear on screen?

Screen performance is an important part of the Volt programme, and students will have opportunities to work in front of cinema grade cameras.

How do I apply to Volt?

Families can complete the Volt application form and follow the joining process provided by the company.

What happens after I submit an application?

The Volt team will review the application and contact the family with the next steps.

Can parents stay and watch classes?

No. Sadly we do not allow parents to remain on site during classes. This for one presents a safeguarding issue for us as we require that all adults in the room during classes are DBS checked and safeguarding trained with us. It is also our experience that this does not work in the best interests of the students themselves.

Can parents speak to the teaching team?

Yes. We encourage appropriate communication between parents and the Volt team.

What happens if my child is nervous or lacks confidence?

Confidence is something we actively develop. Students are encouraged to grow at their own pace while being challenged to step outside their comfort zone.

What if my child wants to pursue performing professionally?

Volt is particularly suited to young people who want serious performance training and to perform professionally.
